Sleep Problems
There are several types of sleep problems that require clinical care by a physician or other healthcare professional.

- Overview of Sleep Problems
- Insomnia
- Sleep Apnea
- Narcolepsy
- Restless Legs Syndrome

When sleep does not come easily.

If you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, if you feel sleepy during the day or wake in the morning feeling less than refreshed, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder.

Getting the proper amount of rest is often difficult but it remains critically important. Getting a peaceful night’s sleep in today’s fast-paced society is challenging. There are many reasons: heavy work loads, excess caffeine use and intrusive technology, such as cell phones and computers, blur the line between daytime and nighttime and keep the mind over-stimulated, often causing or contributing to the onset of sleep difficulties.

How much sleep is necessary?
There is no magic number. Sleep requirements change throughout your lifetime. You may need nine hours of sleep, while someone of the same age and gender may be perfectly happy with seven hours of sleep.

Are you a candidate for a sleep study?
Patients with complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness, tiredness and symptoms or signs of obstructive sleep apnea should be referred for a sleep study.

Common symptoms and signs of obstructive sleep apnea include:

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Snoring
  • Witnessed apneas
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Large neck
  • Morning headaches
  • Depressed mood
